Investigator’s Pack: Gear Idea

When you start a game with a character who is some kind of problem solver then starting with the investigator’s pack is a fun way of getting some cool gear to start with.

Investigator’s PackWhat is an investigator?

A character who solves mysteries is probably an investigator. Some examples include a detective, private investigator or archeologist.

HLG designed this pack as a cool starter pack for players who want to play mystery solving characters. Here’s a description of the inventory, cost and the reason for each item.

Investigator’s Pack

Suggested cost for the pack 120 gp

Dagger (it’s always a good idea to have a dagger. They are multi functional tools that can cut, pry and pick at things) 2 gp

Whetstone 1 cp

Book (to write down your findings in) 25 gp

Ink pen 2 cp

Ink bottle 10 gp

Magnifying glass (to see those hard to see clues) 100 gp

Mirror steel (to see around corners, up chimneys and other hard to reach places) 5 gp

Glass bottle (to store any substances you find in order to analyse them) 2 gp

Lantern, hooded (to bring light to the investigation sight) 5 gp

Hempen rope, 50 feet 1 gp

Satchel 2 gp 5 lb. (a satchel is like a backpack – we used the backpack stats – but it slings over one shoulder or across the torso. It’s easier top flap open and remove individual items which one needs when investigating)

Investigator’s PackWorth noting

All of these items (except the satchel, which is a modified backpack) can be found in the player’s handbook at the costs we stipulated above.

The price we suggest for the kit  is based on the overall cost of the items at a discount for buying it as a kit.

If your Dungeon Master (DM) allows you to then get these items before the game starts or if you don’t have the gold for it yet then you can pick up the items as you go. Just be sure to let your DM know that you want to do that so they are prepared.

As a DM you can also have a merchant selling these kits to possible investigators. They can either be selling them as part of a legitimate trade business or at an inflated rate if they know the demand for them is high.
