Under the glow of a full moon, the peaceful village of Willowmere gathers for a birthday celebration.
Lanterns hang between crooked rooftops. Music drifts through cobbled streets. Fresh cakes cool on open windowsills while villagers pile gifts high in the center of the square.
But one gift should never have been opened.
It bears no name. No ribbon. No explanation.
When the lid is lifted, silver mist pours into the night air.
The laughter fades. The music stops.
One by one, the villagers collapse into magical sleep.
Everyone… except you.
A forgotten prophecy has awakened. A goddess of Fate is watching. And before sunrise, the birthday celebrant must become more than the guest of honor.
They must become The Birthday Hero.
The Birthday Hero is a Dungeons & Dragons 5e one-shot adventure for 3–5 characters at level 4, fully compatible with the 2024 D&D rules update.
Designed specifically as a birthday-themed adventure, this quest places one player at the heart of the story while the party races against time to break a magical curse.
Perfect for a celebratory game night, the adventure blends:
Puzzle solving
Tactical combat encounters
Mythic divine trials
Time-pressure storytelling
Character-driven moments
The result is a cinematic fantasy adventure that unfolds over a single night.
Run it in one long session or two shorter sessions, making it ideal for:
Birthday D&D sessions
Standalone one-shot adventures
Side quests within an ongoing campaign
Introducing new players to D&D
Special event game nights
The mysterious silver box is tied to Hermatine, the goddess of Fate.
Now Willowmere lies trapped beneath a magical slumber.
Only the heroes remain awake and the curse will claim them too if they fail before dawn.
To break the enchantment, the party must:
Journey through moonlit forests guarded by Gnolls
Cross a crumbling bridge over a raging river
Face divine trials inside the Temple of Fate
Solve a mysterious emotion-based statue puzzle
Resist the lure of cursed treasure
Defeat a Lesser Chimera and its Grotesque guardians
If they fail…
Willowmere will sleep for one hundred years.
The entire adventure takes place during a single night. Players may take short rests before sunrise, no long rests.
Skill challenges and trials use a dynamic DC scaling system that adjusts based on player success or failure, maintaining tension throughout the story.
A sealed chamber of five emotion-themed statues presents multiple creative solutions, rewarding clever problem solving.
A vault overflowing with gold offers a dangerous choice, take anything except the Jewel of Fate, and catastrophic consequences follow.
Face a Lesser Chimera and shadow-dwelling Grotesques inside a glowing treasure vault.
Negotiate or battle Kobolds riding giant weasels as the race against sunrise intensifies.
Encounters can be easily adjusted for stronger or weaker parties.
